This small watercolour was painted en plein air, directly in front of the landscape. A quiet bay lies between green shores, with pale water and a distant landscape almost dissolving into the air. A tiny red boat moves through the stillness, while an old stone wall in the foreground keeps the viewer close to the shore. When I paint outdoors, I try to preserve the first impression of a place — its light, distance, moving water and air. Rather than describing every detail, I want to retain something of the moment itself.
